WIRES Tech Talk – Open to the Public
Wednesday, September 20, 2023
2-3 PM ET

Join WIRES for the first of our Tech Talks – presentations from technology companies working to design and bring to market crucial Grid Enhancing Technologies.

This first presentation in the series will look at a cost saving and patent pending methodology of identifying conductor types using high resolution imagery and proprietary software. This allows manufacturers’ data to be utilized for conductors when completing FAC-008 facility ratings. The approach allows personnel to perform measurements hundreds of feet from energized equipment. The results indicate, for instance, that Conductor and Strand Diameters can be determined with an accuracy of 0.03 inches, and an outer strand count can be calculated. This gives three data points that, when combined with engineering and purchase records, can identify the conductor type. A single crew using this approach can make 25-50 measurements on a daily basis without de-energizing the lines. This presentation will provide a case study for one utility that was able to cut their compliance effort timeline by several years using this method.
